Brooklyn, NY -- On September 9, Grayson Capps will release his fourth album, Rott 'N' Roll, on Hyena Records. The long-player's title stems from a phrase used by fans to characterize the music of the southern troubadour. Prostitutes, alcoholics, vagrants and drifters often inhabit Grayson's songs, while his live performances are ignited by equal doses of raucous Southern soul, back-country stomp and roadhouse blues. For Grayson himself, Rott 'N' Roll has come to represent the state of mind needed to play uncompromising roots music as a means for survival in the Dirty South; the yin and yang between the debauchery of life on the road and the come down upon returning home. But as the album's opening track "Back To The Country" makes clear, when Rott 'N' Roll is the credo, even the ease of going home means, "eating cornbread and raising hell."

Recorded at Grayson's home studio in Franklin, Tennessee, he and co-producer Trina Shoemaker set out to capture the energy of his live performances. Subsequently, many of the final tracks were taken from first takes. Grayson and his band The Stumpknockers, featuring Tommy MacLuckie on lead guitar, Josh Kerin on bass and John Milham on drums, set up shop at his farmhouse, rehearsing during the afternoons and spending evenings around a bonfire in the backyard. If the spirit moved them, they'd cut a track, overdub a guitar part or record a drunken chorus of rednecks who'd often find their way to the sessions from all points south: "Gran Maw Maw" and "Big Ol' Woman" being case in point. If the inspiration wasn't flowing, they'd wander around the mountain that sits in back of Grayson's property, quite literally bonding with the Native American spirits. The album's second track, "Arrowhead," paints a picture of this idyllic setting.

Throughout the 13 tracks on Rott 'N' Roll, the listener gets a first hand look at subversion. "Big Black Buzzard" circles with a wicked hill country fervor that would make R.L. Burnside take cover. "The Sun Don't Shine On Willy" is informed by Grayson's sharp eye for the Southern Gothic with lyrics like: "He looks like old Boo Radley, he’s pale and his veins are blue, now he looks like one of them Hadleys after they've been drunk a month or two." The live favorite, "Sock Monkey" marks guitarist Tommy MacLuckie's songwriting debut with a blast of country punk absurdity. Yet, there are also moments of clarity and tenderness. "Guitar" is perhaps Grayson's most autobiographical song to date. "Back To The Country," though full of hiss and swagger, actually addresses the search for simplicity in a fast changing, often deceptive modern world. "The Fear Fruit Bearing Tree" is a biting poem that speaks truth to power in the face of corporate greed and government fear-mongering.

Having drawn comparisons over his first three albums to the likes of Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt and Drive By Truckers, to name but a few, Rott 'N' Roll proves Grayson Capps an artist equally singular in vision as those to whom he's compared. The release will be available in CD, digital and vinyl formats. Stay tuned for tour dates to be announced shortly.

Seth Walker performs for the House of Blues "Ground Breaking" ceremony in Houston TX with Dan Akroyd!

Seth was invited to perform for the House Of Blues "Ground breaking ceremony" in Houston, Texas with Dan Akroyd! In tradition with every HOB, Akroyd pours Mississippi dirt from the "Crossroads" (where legend has it that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil) into the concrete foundation of every HOB stage. Seth was honored to provide the music for this ceremony, and to be the FIRST artist to perform at this institutional venue! Doors will open there in October and Seth is slated to perform.

JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY: "Lil Tae Rides Again: LIVE!" Now Available (MP3/FLAC)

The ever-evolving Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey continues its collaboration with producer Tae Meyulks with the new release "Lil' Tae Rides Again: Live!" The innovative process began when JFJO recorded a batch of tunes and asked Tae Meyulks to have his way with them. He cut them & spliced them into new forms and textures, essentially re-composing them in his own image. Now, the process takes a third step, as the Odyssey has taken Meyulks' creations and transcribed them for live performance, reinterpreting the reinterpretations, if you will. For fans of Lil' Tae Rides Again, it will be a revelation. For those who found themselves missing the hands-on JFJO sound in Lil' Tae, it will be the missing piece. Featuring new JFJO member, Peter Tomshany on acoustic & electric guitar; Reed Mathis on guitar, lap steel, and bass; Brian Haas on rhodes and moog-bass; and the ever-amazing Josh Raymer on drums.

During the spring of 2008, Lil' Tae went on the road. The new JFJO lineup took the stage night after night performing the album in its entirety, in the actual track order, complete with segues and incredible visuals by the Golden Child. This official live version was compiled and edited by the band, combining performances from Portland, Denver, and Tulsa. The result is a perfect companion to the studio CD, Lil' Tae Rides Again.

JFJO will continue to perform the album on stages around the world throughout 2008.

New Common Market MP3 from 'Tobacco Road'

Exclusive! Get a four-plus minute earful of the Seattle hip-hop duo's new title track.

By Kenny Herzog 06.27.08 10:21 AM

Lyric-spitter RA Scion and his producing partner-in-crime Sabzi (also of Blue Scholars repute) first fueled their way out of Seattle's rain-soaked streets with the Black Patch War EP earlier this year, but if the title track to Tobacco Road, out Sept. 9 via HYENA/Massline, is any indication, hip-hop heads will be nodding along to a mature and nuanced record that's anything but plodding (click here to read more...).

Best of East Bay Express: MUSHROOM

from: East Bay Express

BEST JAMMED-OUT KRAUT-ROCK FUNK COMBO
Mushroom

It's a problem we've all faced from time to time — a bunch of friends want to see some live music: One is a jam-band fan, another digs Krautrock (i.e., '70s German bands Can, Cluster, Amon Duul, etc.), another loves groove-oriented jazz (Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, etc.), and still another hasn't outgrown '60s rock (Traffic, Steppenwolf). How to potentially please all these seemingly disparate tastes? Only one band: Mushroom. Actually a collective with a core membership (drummer Pat Thomas, multi-instrumentalist Erik Pearson, bassist Ned Doherty) than a proper band, Mushroom surveys classic rock song structures and freewheeling improvisation, anchored by solid, earthy rhythms. Honorary 'shrooms include singers Gary Floyd and Alison Faith Levy, guitarist Dan Olmsted, and horn-fellows Ralph Carney and Eddie Gale. Truly trippy (click here to read full article with notes from the editor...).

With Headline Dates In Midwest

"Equate the sound to how you feel when go to your nearest smokey bar, light a cigarette, order a bucket, kick back and kinda feel like you don't give a f*ck. In other words, it's a real good feeling you get listening to these guys."

Brooklyn, NY -- Backyard Tire Fire have announced a September headline tour in support of their forthcoming new album, The Places We Lived, due August 26. It's the first long-player by the Bloomington, Illinois-based band to be released on independent label Hyena Records. The 15-date Midwest run will kick-off in Chicago with an album release party and performance at Metro. Bloodshot Records' recording artists Ha Ha Tonka will open throughout the tour. Prior to that, Backyard Tire Fire will spend the summer playing select festival dates, including Milwaukee's Summerfest and Louisville's Forecastle Festival.

Distinguished by a rare combination of workingman authenticity and indie-rock eccentricity, The Places We Lived is defiantly contemporary, while remaining true to its Midwestern roots. It's a collection spiked with the truth-telling salt of Hank Williams, the beautiful melancholy of vintage Tom Waits and the pop smarts of a Midwest Big Star. On songs like "How In The Hell Did You Get Back Here," "Shoulda Shut It" and "Rainy Day," Backyard Tire Fire balance pointed songwriting with visceral performances and intriguing studio production. The Places We Lived follows the band's 2007 studio effort, Vagabonds and Hooligans, a pivotal release that found the group popping up on numerous tastemaker blogs and year-end "best of" lists. They'd go on to play over 200 dates last year, including opening slots and co-bills with Jason Isbell, Clutch, Lynyrd Skynyrd and William Elliott Whitmore among others.

Backyard Tire Fire are additionally planning East and West Coast tour dates for the Fall. December will find them back on the road with Reverend Horton Heat.

The Weekender on DALE WATSON

Watson Keeps Country Old-School

from: TheWeekender.com

by Nikki M. Mascali

Dale Watson looks like country and, with his twangy bluesy delivery, he sounds like country. But don’t dare insult him by calling him country. Correction: Don’t dare insult him by calling him today’s country.

To Watson, that is the ultimate “c” word that he likens to Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Rascal Flatts, all of which he isn’t shy of lambasting.

“They have successfully taken what was country music and turned it into something else,” Watson explained. “Obviously a lot of people like it or it wouldn’t be so successful, but just because it sells a million [copies] doesn’t mean shit to me.”

Watson is based in Austin, Texas — a musically hot city that has been homebase for many: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Asleep at the Wheel, Butthole Surfers and the annual South by Southwest festival.

“Austin’s never not been a hot scene, really,” he said. “There’s so many different genres. It’s very musically free — there’s no shackles like there is in Nashville where you have to be Top 40 to get listened to.”

Today’s Top 40 country is quite different from the Top 40 of Watson’s youth when today’s legends — Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Buck Owens, Bob Wills and Johnny Cash — ruled the airwaves in the ’70s.

“That’s when it was still great country music, it wasn’t this pop stuff,” Watson said. “The general public will consume whatever is advertised the most, that’s just the way it is. Even that William Hung sold a bunch of records, and he’s about as bad as you can get.

“People like me, there’s no animosity or jealousy in what’s going on, it’s just the way it is and it’s always been this way. Whatever is marketed and has money behind it is what is going to be the flavor.”

For the artists like himself, Watson created the term “Ameripolitan,” which he has defined on Wikipedia as “original music with prominent roots influence.” He coined the phrase because he found “Americana” too broad a term for his type of music.

“It didn’t really focus on or strengthen the type of music that I like to keep out there,” he said. “I think country music — what was country music — has to go the route of bluegrass, which was considered part of country music, but they created their own festivals, awards and genres.”

Watson practices what he preaches in keeping his own music thoroughly rooted in yesterday’s country, and nowhere does he capture those roots more than on his latest release, last year’s “From The Cradle To The Grave.”

Watson recorded and wrote most of it at the Tennessee log cabin of his friend Johnny Knoxville, which just so happens to be the former cabin of one Johnny Cash (click here to read full article...).
